Nicholas Payton | March 2011 Highlights

March 30, 2011
Nicholas Payton is proud to report he became a part of USPS history with his participation at the unveiling of a new United States Postal Service Forever 'JAZZ' stamp. The stamp recognizes the unique American art form that was born in the Crescent City. At the March 26 ceremony, held in New Orleans at the Contemporary Arts Center, the CAC hosted a recreation of the great CAC Jazz Orchestra that first performed in 1996, featuring all-new arrangements of classic songs. The band was fronted by Germaine Bazzle, Ed Perkins and Nicholas Payton! Read about the origins of the stamp's artwork by visiting the designer's website, Paul Rogers blog.

The Concorde still grounded (since 2003) but Nicholas Payton's BITCHES Blasts Off anyway. CHICAGO SUN-TIMES 'Dave Hoekstra notes "Acclaimed New Orleans trumpet player Nicholas Payton has been dipping into the electronic, late 1960s-era Miles Davis brew..." [Payton’s ‘Bitches’ a nod to Davis]. OFFBEAT's David Kunian says Nicholas Payton's Bitches recalls Prince and Miles Davis [Nicholas Payton Bitches (mixtape)]. And's Alison Fensterstock says the album has a "groovy, sensual vibe" and 'Freesia' with Esperanza Spalding is nothing less than "joyous...early-love ecstacy" [Nicholas Payton explores the angst of breaking up with new songs]. The album isn't available for sale (yet), but notes Payton, "If you dig deep enough (you) should be able to find it."
