More amazing music continues to happen this month: The Nicholas Payton XXX performs at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, 5:45 PM, Sunday, April 29 @ Zatrain's/WWOZ Jazz Tent.
Complexions Contemporary Ballet will premiere a new musical work at the Mahalia Jackson Theatre on April 21. About the upcoming engagement, Chris Waddington @ nola.com writes, "Good thing that Dwight Rhoden is accustomed to working with geniuses at Complexions Contemporary Ballet. The acclaimed choreographer will have at least three in tow when he comes to New Orleans this week: jazz trumpeter Nicholas Payton; Wendy Whelan, the prima ballerina of the New York City Ballet; and Desmond Richardson, the superstar dancer who founded Complexions with Rhoden in 1994." Check out the rehearsal video of dancers Desmond Richardson & Wendy Whelan rehearsing in New York City for the upcoming world premiere of "Charter," choreographed by Dwight Rhoden and set to an original score by Nicholas Payton.
Hot off the Presses: The Village Voice says Nicholas Payton's April 12th performance with Dr. John at the Brooklyn Academy of Music was 'full of brilliant details like a lovely staircase of chromatic steps heading to the bridge. Dr. John's Louis Armstrong tribute happened two weeks ago, but here Payton summoned more of Satchmo than the whole of that 90-minute show, right down to the one thing we didn't hear then: a perfectly executed gliss up to a final ringing high note."
